A security force protecting the Imam Ali mosque in the Shiite holy city of Najaf has found and defused two home-made bombs, an official with the body said on Thursday.

The explosives were found at about midnight (2000 GMT) after two suspicious people were seen carrying bags near the shrine where a leading Shiite cleric died in a huge blast that also killed 82 others on August 29.

The official, Nayef Abdul Amir Mohammad Shallash said a patrol from the security force came under fire and two of their cars were hit, but no personnel were injured.
