I agree that defense has to be on the table with entitlements. It's one of the Big Three. A good Republican candidate will come up with ideas to accomplish what we need in defense without using the department mainly as an engine for passing cash to industries in congressional districts (this also happened with NASA, and is still going on).

As for subsidies and tax breaks (not the same thing), many Republicans and almost all conservatives favor a tax code that does not grant anyone special favors. Incidentally, targeting just one industry with tax penalties is no different and no better than targeting just one industry with tax goodies. Unfortunately the tax code, like the spending I was talking about in the last paragraph, is a major method for politicians to dispense political largesse and punishment. I get a tour of the tax code every year when I run TurboTax. Each of those little questions represents a favor to some industry, or a discouragement or punishment for another. Hard to imagine a majority of legislators willing to lose all that power.
