In order for a democratic system to work, the populace has to be heavily involved. That's not the case in our society today. Most people can't even name the Democratic candidates running for the presidency. I'm a Republican and I can do that. A democracy needs an educated and proactive, not reactionary, populace to function properly.

Last semester at school, one of my professors asked the class several questions about our government (it was a class on public speaking). She asked how long were the terms of the President, the Senate, and the House of Reps, I was the only person in the room that could answer them. No one else knew the answers. If a class full of college students couldn't answer such basic questions about our political system, our society is in deep trouble.
