re: I noticed that: "Schwarzenegger, who, like the Von Trapp family, is a native of Austria ... "

I’m sure this goes against the grain for many true believers, but the media, depending upon the editor, is usually out of touch with those to whom they purport to report. Some are on the mark, but far too many miss it entirely.

He has also been dogged by allegations that he expressed admiration for Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler in a 1975 interview, though those charges largely dissipated after two figures involved in the interview discounted them. Schwarzenegger, who, like Hitler, is a native of Austria, has vehemently denied that he ever had Nazi sympathies.

I think the editor to the piece at CNN actually believes this, that the "charges" dissipated after two figures involved in the interview discounted them. I believe it was that they finally presented the entire quote. As I said, it depends upon the editor of the story. Too much personal baggage in many pieces.

Butler considered Schwarzenegger to be a "flagrant, outspoken admirer of Hitler," who also frequently played Nazi marching tunes and "pretended to be an S.S. officer."

The full quote, when asked who he admired:
"It depends on what for. I admired Hitler, for instance, because he came from being a little man with almost no formal education, up to power. And I admire him for being such a good public speaker and for his way of getting to the people and so on. But I didn't admire him for what he did with it."
-- Film producer George Butler's quote of Arnold Schwarzenegger, circa 1975-76

Yeah, that sounds pretty bad. He states he didn't admire what Hitler did. Time for another recall.

Peter Davis, who conducted the interviews for the documentary, told CNN that Schwarzenegger cited Hitler when asked about his heroes growing up, but suggested the comment had been taken out of context.

"He said to me during the interview that his first hero had been Hitler, and he almost was shaking his head at himself at the time and essentially went on to say that as soon as I came to my senses, my hero was John F. Kennedy," Davis said.

Davis said he believes the admiration of Hitler came when Schwarzenegger was a young boy. He was 13 when Kennedy was elected president in 1960.

"I felt his mention of Hitler was self-critical candor at the time," Davis said. "I didn't think he was in any way advocating anything that Adolf Hitler advocated."

"... my hero was John F. Kennedy."

Definite recall-material.

"I hated the regime -- hate the regime, the Third Reich, the whole Nazi philosophy -- have always fought against it. I despise everything that the Nazis stood for, or Hitler stood for."
-- Arnold Schwarzenegger to press conference Thursday, October 2, 2003

"I think the voters are tired of gutter politics and gutter journalism."
-- Maria Shriver, projected to be California’s new First Lady

To the media's eyes, we (the real public) are such idiots,
