re: Is there no quiet refuge from the stultifying boredom of MLB?

Ouu, no Cubbie fans on this board? I heard a collective groan from Cub fans around the US last night when that happened. The Chicago Trib said there was "shock and awe" in the City when the fan stuck his hand out. The Cubs have not won the World Series since 1908, the longest drought of any professional team in American football, baseball, basketball or ice hockey and due of course to the famous "Billy Goat curse":

In 1945, tavern owner "Billy Goat" Sianis showed up at Wrigley Field for the fourth game of the World Series with two tickets and his goat, Murphy. When ushers denied Murphy entry, Sianis laid a curse on the Cubs, saying Wrigley would never host another World Series. The Cubs lost the World Series that year and have not hosted one since. Nor have they let the goat or his descendants into the ballpark to break the curse. Kerry Wood is on the mound tonight .. all Cub fans will be holding their breaths .. too bad the Cubs and the Sox couldn't face off .. if it went to a 7th game, the World would have come to an end! Ahh, but ya gotta be a beisbol fan!
