Once upon a time
We had universal health care and prescription benefits.
It was in the form of the small fee paid by my parents for a office visit and prescriptions that did not cost a day's earnings. The care was so relatively inexpensive that those that couldn't afford it were treated for free by most doctors. Most doctors were "well off" in those days, just like they are now.
We had it once and in spite of the fact that the founding fathers didn't promise it we need it again. How to do it is a problem.
