re: State Dept. Study Foresaw Trouble Now Plaguing Iraq

Not sure what point this makes. Many problems were anticipated. Some weren't. They are being dealt with as they come up. This is how war works, and also a lot of foreign policy.

I know that Bush's opponents are working overtime to create the myth that his administration and the military screwed up royally in the after-war scenario, but it doesn't stand up to any reasonable examination.

Ignored are the problems that were anticipated and nipped in the bud.

...numerous fires in the oil fields, a massive humanitarian crisis, widespread revenge attacks against former leaders of Mr. Hussein's government and threats from Iraq's neighbors. In fact, none of those problems occurred to any great degree.

Yes, they didn't occur because they were actively stopped, especially in the case of the oil fields, dams, and other areas where our troops poured in and squelched sabotage attempts. The lack of refugees might say something about how the average Iraqi felt about how the war was going, but that gets overlooked too.

Also ignored are other huge problems the antiwar people confidently predicted would happen, that also never turned up. Months of street warfare. Use of chemical weapons on our troops.* Mass uprisings from surrounding Arab countries. Full-bore religious warfare. Israel brought into the war. Thousands of Americans dead, and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis.

To hear them talk now, you would think that all of them last winter were predicting that the most serious thing we would run across in invading Iraq was reconstructing the infrastructure and dealing with sporadic guerilla and terror attacks.

Rewriting their own history seems to be a full-time job on the Left.

*Yeah, I know. To hear them talk now, you'd think they knew the whole time that the Iraqi army wouldn't use chemical weapons on us. Almost every position we overran was equipped with suits and other anti-chemical-weapon equipment. The Iraqi army sure thought SOMEONE was going to use them. And since we don't have any in our active arsenal, and everyone on the planet knows it, it makes me wonder a bit.
