Problems with history instruction:
3. A tendency for some history teachers to push a solid anti-American, or to be more precise, anti-Western agenda on almost all levels. I have seen a number of grotesque examples of this in articles and such, but fortunately nowhere near my kids as yet. For this reason I suspect (or at least hope), that the leftist indoctrinators are still a minority among all teachers, and that the most extreme examples are touted.
I think we need a much more comprehensive instruction of history at all grade levels, and a broad spectrum at each level. I would also like to see more emphasis on modern history, which has the greatest effect on our current politics and policies. Karl Marx and Franklin Roosevelt have had much more influence on our modern world than the ancient Egyptians. At certain grade levels in our schools kids could tell you who the Mayans were, or the name of every Indian tribe in California, but couldn't tell you who Thomas Edison, Ulysses S. Grant, or Harry Truman were.
Go to the average junior high school kid and ask him who Dwight Eisenhower was.
I agree with you that many teachers aren't as qualified in their specialties as they should be.
As far as the Reagan legacy goes, it is actively being buried under leftist lies and distortions. Have you seen this book? A collection of Reagan's personal writings, as opposed to speeches and the like, it's the most accurate picture you will get of his real thinking.
I think we all know who really won the Cold War. So do the Russians.
