I'll be honest with you, I haven't been too impressed by LeCarre's overall body of work, but "Tinker Tailor" and "Smiley's People" always leave me depressed because they're so damned good.
Any one with any hopes of becoming a writer can't help but be crushed when exposed to that level of competition. The TV miniseries starring Alec Guinness were more than up to the task of adapting the material for the screen, too. I stand in awe of both.
BTW, the recent theatrical feature with Gary Oldham wasn't bad at all, but it really doesn't come close to the TV series.
