Haven't seen the recent film, but I agree on the Alec Guinness projects.
They were amazing. And so were the novels. Page-turners that you have to read slowly, whatever that means. I've read a few of LeCarre's later works, but he did not put as much into weaving a complicated story with a huge backstory, as before. Still, I've never been sorry I picked one of them up.
