A history of the ufo myth by Curtis Peebles, originally published by Smithsonian Institution Press, 1994,
It is an excellent and heavily footnoted chronology of the evolution of this pop culture myth. The author shows how the Air Force and CIA got involved early, how the ufoologists misquoted official documents, how ufools embellished and grew the stories that ultimately merged into the modern alien-among-us version. It is fascinating to read and gives me great respect for the 'X-Files' writers and producers for the incredible job they did in giving the myth structure and even a certain beauty.
I had not been aware until reading this book of how much inner turmoil exists within the ufool mevement over differing views of the core dogma.
All in all a very worthy read.
