re: So far, both stories seem to run about neck and neck . . .

Still pretty bad, considering the Pentagon corrected the much older story months ago. The media, though, cannot seem to allow the correction to just lie there.

Now, in defense of Lynch, her only real argument against the military is the release of incomplete information to the media, and that her rescue should not have been filmed. Well, the media embed was there, and anything less than filming would have prompted a quick, loud, sustained cry of censorship. That said, now the public wanted to know what was going on with her, as they still do today. She was an instant soap opera, and the military did its best to convey what happened. The problem was that she was infirmed, with very limited visitation access. The public (AKA the media) demanded answers anyway, and the Pentagon made best assumptions from the available data, with always "more to follow". As the real story came from PVT Lynch, the Pentagon adjusted its answers, and the public eventually got the real story.

Still not good enough for the media.

And I think another hype-line the public holds for the whole affair rests upon the actions of a rescuing soldier, who placed a small American flag on her litter while she was being scurried aboard the airlift. Personally, I found the action to be a bit hokey, but then you also have to bear in mind the mentality of the force that went in and pulled her out, and know that, hokey as this may have been perceived, the flag would likely have been placed whether the media was present, or not.

Just me.

Cheers,
Dan
