Two years into Flight 587 investigation. 11/12/2001

Still testing components

And still no mention of how the repair (apparent through-bolting of a delamination) in this picture may have played a part in the crash.

Tom wondered if the repair could have been part of the production process but there are no 'bolts' in this picture of another tail section attachment point.

According to Larry, the repair was 14 years old at the time of the accident. This could mean either it was a good, solid fix- or it finally let go. From what I read, stresses in the tail were meant to travel down, and be absorbed by, the thickest part- the lug attachment point. Wouldn't the stresses be effectively "damned" at the repair, where it broke?

The repair may have nothing to do with the crash but I find it odd that there is no mention (that I could find) in the NTSB reports.
