The need to "understand" cultures has been transformed to mean one must suppress disapproval. This suppression has led others to embolden this process to include "unconditional acceptance."
Part of the problem is the misunderstanding of equality. In America the belief that everyone is equal is pervasive. The truth is in America, "Everyone is equal under law."
Anyone should be able to look around them and see we are not equal. Equality is not a goal to aspire to or a noble concept. Equality under the law is a good concept - because it means that our many obvious differences are not held against us.
Consensus is reached in our lawmaking bodies as to what differences are unacceptable - murder, abuse and theft top these uniformly unacceptable behavior patterns.
The average inhabitant of the middle east is often illiterate and unable to function in a manner the west would find intelligent and acceptable. Customs are not sacred things - they are often barbaric remnants of utter stupidity.
In the middle east the man is vastly more valued than is a woman. A woman is a worthless thing, oftentimes less worth than livestock or other farm animals. If the girl is raped by her brothers - she must die in order to restore the family dignity. Such insanity and chauvinism is commonplace and by putting a spotlight on it - reminds everyone of this fallacious equality of cultures concept.
When a mother can kill her daughter so easily - how difficult can murder be to such minds - or to such a culture? Murdering is a way of life endorsed and encouraged by their state religion. Yes one must indeed "understand" such a c ulture - understand that it is vastly inferior and based on age-old religious ignorance and caveman social development.
The middle east has been in a time warp for the past thousand years -thanks to religion.
