That deterrence is not an issue to Islamic fanatics is documented. An Islamic fanatic would easily see the loss of millions of Iranians in return for the destruction of Israel as a great victory.
Compare this to a worldview that sees the loss of about one military soldier a day to hostile action as a sign of utter failure in a military operation.
Does this mean that the fanatic has the right idea? Of course not. But neither does the other extreme.
