Enemy at the Gates

I'm watching Enemy at the Gates on TNT as I write this...I'd almost forgotten what a completely brilliant film it is. They're showing it pretty much uncut, bravo for them. I'll still only give them an A- because it's not letterboxed.

I remember reading the book at university and thinking the sniper episode would make a great movie. Of course in the book it only amounts to a couple of pages. It seemed to me a recreation of 1942 Stalingrad would be prohibitively expensive (back then state-of-the-art computer graphics involved little more than chrome spheres floating over a black-and-white tiled floor). How could such a movie be made in a way that did justice to the mind-boggling scale of the events?

There's a German-Russian co-production of perhaps a decade ago called Stalingrad, and it's quite good...but IMHO Enemy at the Gates better captures the breathtaking sweep.
