I agreed that more precautions needed to be taken with electronic voting systems. My premise is that these precautions are not difficult, and I don't see why the machine companies just don't get on with them and put this behind us.
It doesn't take touch screen machines to louse up people's faith in elections. The Democrats succeeded in doing that with simple punch cards. "So, who DID this person really intend to vote for?" Cripes. I imagine that any voting technology would be vulnerable to a deliberate campaign to raise suspicions about it.

Color-coordinating the vegetables. Cripes.
I found a tape of "Alice's Restaurant" in one of those gas station shops on a trip to Tahoe, and was able to play it for my kids on the way home. I love that routine, and still steal from it every chance I get. "Pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one" is a favorite. I still remember the movie.
I sometimes wonder how much of a grip the 60s would have gotten on our society had there not been a draft. It was amazing how fast the protest movement dried up when the draft was ended.
Heck, I wonder if the Vietnam War would even have been feasible without a draft.
