miserable failure
hmm. . . . whaddaya know, I checked it out and newsday has this article on it.
It looks like it was a group outside of google doing this.
on an other interesting sidenote, Al Gore was a senior advisor to google (hey as long as he's got a job ;-) The only thing I found mentioning this though was this article that mentioned it as a sidenote:

all in all I like google, and will continue to use it, until they start "intentionally" swaying my search results one way or another. . .
isn't capitalism wonderful?
