In an infinite universe each subset must continually expand and accelerate this expansion as the infinite keeps growing exponentially.
Dark energy and dark matter is simply the energy outside our limited ability to detect. It's frequency and wavelength is as invisible to us now as were radio waves to the Greeks.
How anyone can observe an accelerating and expanding material universe and not realize you must be observing a subset of some greater whole is one of life's great mysteries - and continually dumbfounds me.
Each ring is expanding and accelerating its expansion as viewed from any other point on the ring. Each ring is a subset and fed energy from the next level up. Our material dimension is fed by this "dark energy" which is really "light" energy at such a high frequency and small wavelength that we can't see or identify it. It's not only linked to the nucleus of every atom but it sponsors our mass dimension and triggers the formation of atoms.
Ok, forget the quick gloss-over. Re-read the above paragraph twenty or more times until each line is REALLY understood.* I am not joking. Twenty times will just start the neurons firing. If you have to imagine yourself riding on a single ring looking out - do so. Now replace the water with expanding space and H20 with galaxies.
Get it?
