Saddam says he didn't have weapons of mass destruction.

So, what did you expect him to say? "Oh, yeah, it was a fair cop. Here's where I hid a whole pile of evidence against me."

The tone of his various comments, gleaned from a number of sources and quotes, leads me to an uncomfortable possible conclusion:

Saddam thinks he can beat this rap.

Much of this is sheer looney megalomania, of course, but he does not seem to have said anything different, or in any different way, than he would have if he had been interviewed in one of his palaces. Same statements, same rhetoric, same tone, same old crap.

"Hey, who knows?" he may be thinking. "How many other world leaders in history came out of jail cells eventually to rule again? The U.N. will never let them kill me."

I think Saddam may have surrendered, but now that he's clean, fed, rested, and using a flush toilet, I'm not sure he's given up.
