An example:
Richard Cohen empties his bladder in the Washington Post.
Other than the "unilateral" bullshit, the other rank lie I get tired of is that we ever declared an end to the war.
At least twice now, Americans have celebrated the end of the war in Iraq -- once last April when the statute of Hussein was toppled in Baghdad's Firdaus Square and again the next month when Bush himself declared major combat operations over. "Mission Accomplished," the banner on the USS Abraham Lincoln proclaimed. Since then, more than 300 Americans have died in Iraq.
Any military man could tell you this was crap, and there has never been a single statement from the President indicating anything other than that the war was going to be long and difficult. The statue came down to celebrate the taking of Baghdad from the enemy. Nobody expected that they could all go home the next day. The "Mission Accomplished" banner was for the aircraft carrier, which was returning to port, as any five-year-old knew.
But be that as it may.
A few earlier Cohen quotes on Saddam:
"Saddam Hussein lives, and Osama Bin Laden lives. And yet, somehow, the Bush White House wants nothing but congratulations."
"It is a war against a regime - and it might have ended almost before it began had Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and his loathsome sons been killed in that opening night attack on one of his compounds. As it is, he apparently lives - and the war goes on.
