heres an article on what you may be talking about with regards to the unnofficial armor upgrades
There are three different fittings for it, canvas doors and roofs (several modifications like this), thin fiberglass, and armor sheilding. I'm In MI, so we generally get the worthless canvas covered Humvees (they're very cold, and would be as effective at stopping a bullet as riding a convertable with the doors taken off.) But those are generally just for hauling stuff around, and not for combat. A civil affair unit would use this type of kit too, and so I can understand they would want to put some steal on thier humvees.
Heres an article on humvee modernization I heard rumors of new humvees coming out, but I guess those were just rumors.
As for the tires, humvees, and I am sure Strykers too have one helluva run flat in them. And it makes it a pain in the ass to change of of them. Its basically this huge rubber washer ring that fits inside the air pocket of the tire and is almost impossible to get out, I've tried before. Without the right tools you are screwed.
(you know, that a big like line the recruiters use now "hey if you join the Amry/Marines you'll get you very own Humvee!!" Yeah buddy. . .you get your very own humvee to sit and do nothing in a motor pool, to change oil on, and change the tires, and clean, and every monday morning you get to freeze your ass of in cold motor pool and fill out this stupid check list of things that need to be checked on the stupid broken down peioce of crap thats been deadlined in five places for the last 4 months and every time you get to mark down the same five deadlines because the mechanic refuses to do thier job and fix any of them or even acknowlege they exsist and update the fault record.
Rant aside, the DeBka file has it wrong on the Stykers. Basically A Stryker is a chasis. You have your medical stryker, your transport stryker, your indirect fire stryker etc. . . there are different armor setups as well. By default Strykers aren't armored against RPGs, but then again keep in mind, there are different types of RPGs, there are your anti personell, your anti armor, and various flavors of RPG warheads for each.
My over all opinion is that they tried to do too much with the Stryker, you can't carry all the troops you want to carry, have them armored to stop everything you want, have it as light to carry as many of them as you want in a C-130 etc. . . its just a limitation we have so far. . . (though I wonder what they could have done had they sprung for some Chabum armor on the Stryker ;-)
