It was a mutually beneficial move at the time. It nearly doubled the size of our nation and it freed up french forces to fight Napoleon's european wars.
Morally we still owed the French a war debt at the time for their help in achieving our independence, and we were an undeclared ally of Napoleon. We've paid that debt back three times over the last century keeping their butts independent.
