Correction
That English-Metric conversion error was on the Mars Climate Observer, not the Mars Polar Lander. Just remembered that. MCO failed to insert into orbit around Mars because it came in too low. To the best of my recollection, no one knows for sure why MPL failed. It turned out there were some undetected failure modes in the design. Any one of them could've caused the landing to fail.
