Your explanation concerning SP-2 is quite reasonable. A Lockheed engineer's favorite theory concerning MPL was water hammer in the fuel lines induced by partially frozen propellant. We won't know what killed MPL until someone has the opportunity to examine the wreckage. There's some conversation that the MRO spacecraft might shed light upon this issue since it could actually resolve wreckage.
