Ashcroft will bury the investigation

Quite an interesting thread in the comments, morphing to Iran Contra, communism, etc.
The propensity on the left to minimize the communist threat since the end of the Cold War is thoroughly understandable, but disappointing nonetheless. Given the context of the times, it was entirely rational to go to extreme measures to fight it in Central America. This is not to excuse lawbreaking -- I don't -- but it does put the lie to the notion that this is somehow "traitorous" behavior. The people involved in the Iran-Contra affair did what they thought best for the United States and the cause of freedom, regardless of the lawful restrictions under which they were placed. They were wrong, they broke the law, and they were apparently inept, for all of which they deserved to suffer just penalties. But they did not seek to undermine their own country. Criminals, Joey -- not traitors.
