I think it's awesome that the public is interested in Spirit's developments.
I also think it's a mistake to base space policy on what the public-at-large temporarily finds interesting. America's space program, imho, has to become more like a utility and less like a promo for the latest sci-fi picture. It has to be something we do all the time, not just when hits on NASA's websites max out, and it has to continue full-steam ahead even when eliciting yawns from those who only jump on the bandwagon when there're fireworks going off.
