.. couldn't fix it, thanks anyway Scott
I'm going in a few days to the country for a month, so this problem is 'academic' now - or at least until my return in March.
I live in a college inside a university - connected to the intranet. I gave up long ago trying to get anything out of the network managers (emails, phone calls, more emails etc....)
Windows media player streaming usually works (with .wav or .asx) but in this case it seems to be a case of the 'virtual guard dog' (the firewall) being too ferocious & territorial ...

ps i might not be able to post or reply for a while .. it will be a matter of getting to the nearest internet cafe - some 20 km away ..
