note -- calls for *increase* in "robotic probes"

From the document

"NASA will increase the use of robotic exploration to maximize our understanding of the solar system and pave the way for more ambitious manned missions. Probes, landers, and similar unmanned vehicles will serve as trailblazers and send vast amounts of knowledge back to scientists on Earth. "

Specifically, it calls for lunar rover missions no *later* than 2008. Ie, during a Bush second term. That'll be one way to see how serious he is about this.

At a first glance this initative doesn't sound like it takes away from unmanned planetary probes, probably increases them if anything.

I'd like to see more of a comittment on astrophyics -- NGST, etc. Will we sacrifice deep-sky missions for more Moon/Mars probes?

If there are going to be cuts in science missions, where I'd really be sweating is on the "Mission to Planet Earth" stuff. That isn't directly tied to exploration, might well be more suited to NOAA in the first place, and has an unfortunate tendency to come up with results that the GOP doesn't like (Rorabacher was recently complaining about NASA's work on global warming, for example).

One final note, a news story reported that the proposed budgets give NASA a total of an extra $1 billion over five years above current plans. If correct (it seems inconsistent with the pre-speech leaks), that ain't much.
