If it is a comm failure, there are safeguards built in that will recover the system
But it brings to mind that a substantial amount of prgramming for these craft has been done after they were launched and in transit to Mars.
It raises the question of just how strong the programming is on these craft.
Mars remains the elusive enigma, taunting and teasing us from afar.
