Powell then versus Powell now

In February, 2003, Colin Powell told the UN and the world that he had "irrefutable and undeniable proof" that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. Yesterday he said "we don't know yet."

In short, he has effectively admitted to lying to the world body. If his "proof" a year ago was "irrefutable and undeniable," how is it that today he doesn't know? What does this tell you about the quality and veracity of his "proof?" What does this say about his credibility?

Its not too terribly different than Donald Rumsfeld claiming a year ago that "We know he has them, we know where they are," only to prove to us that he had no idea whatsoever what Saddam did not have and where they were not. One can only conclude he just made this spirited piece of rhetoric up on a moment's notice to entertain the White House press corp.

A year ago, Mr. Bush told this nation Iraq possessed hundreds of tons of chemical and biological weapons. Over five hundred American lives and billions of dollars later, we've learned that wasn't true.

This nation deserves better.

As of today, 513 American sons and daughters have died in Iraq in pursuit of weapons of mass destruction that did not exist.

They deserve better.
