Dull images and true colour - Robert Clarke should read this, too

That'll be the sun filter, for finding the Sun and then calculating the position of Earth, as per today's press release. AIR, the Sun filter is L8/R8 (yes, your image is a ...L8M1). For more info on Mars colours, pancam filters, image codes and other cool stuff, check here.

Not sure what the second dot is, but unlikely to be Earth (too close, too bright).

If you play with a solar system program, you could get the simulated view from Mars towards the Sun and see if Venus was there?
