Naming the three hills after the three heros from Apollo-1 is appropriate. My only
quarrel with this is the named features should have been more distinctive and easily recognized from orbit. The heros who died with Columbia and Challenger should also have Martian mountains named after them along with the Russian cosmonauts / heros who died while exploring space.
I should say that this new MER naming convention is the only one that I agree with. IMHO, the names "Spirit" and "Opportunity" are idiotic. I much prefer the original names used by JPL engineers of "Itchy" and "Scratchy". I've resolved to boycott these new idiotic names and always call the two rovers by their original names of MER-A and B. Also calling the dead landing pad of MER-A, "Columbia Memorial Station" is pretty lame. Who's names are they going to assign to the jettisoned cruise rings from MER-A and B? Also, what about the launch fairings and stages from the Delta-II boosters? This stuff starts to become silly after a while.
