The current rise of the market may well be in anticipation of Bush's reelection. Rather than long trends though, it's more common to see fast rises and falls in relation to news like speeches, etc. If an announcement is believed by traders to be bad for the market they short sell, and this persuades others to do the same, and then they profit take.
It can be fast and easy money, in and out of a stock in a day.
