My father was just speaking of this earlier today, sort of off the cuff. He might have seen the story. I had brought up the topic of old phone companies, saying that NYNEX was technically the oldest, and that brought about the topic of old phone booths. He said the catastrophe actually involved maple syrup, but I suppose it could have been molasses. He could not recall the location, just that it was somewhere along the North Atlantic coast. Anyway, it seems phone booths were still sticky months later.
