My problem with using unobtainium is we can't really know it's qualities:
What the price of it (can it be made in large quantities in a short period of time)? And it's actual physical properties- rather than it's hoped for physical properties. And what other things would be affected, if a useful extremely high tensional material is made- what will come first, 50' of carbon-nanotube cable or AI (or the cure for Cancer)?
So my constructive comment is I think high quality bridge steel might better starting point- there is considerable experience with it's long term use. If not bridge steel then something else which is least currently available and used for some applications- for example, I believe the Navy uses a very strong rope (stronger and lighter than steel) for mooring it's ships (read an article on it a while ago- it could be spider silk but I don't remember).
Next constructive comment. What is currently used to climb a cable {assuming the cable is fixed}? We have a present need of anything which uses modest amounts of energy and can go straight up- e.g. normal elevators, search and rescue, or scaling cliffs. And of course, adding to that we need something that can go fast- at least hundreds mph.

If you consider these things, I think you might at least consider a large tower for the base of a lunar space elevator to be practical.
