"I share your views on the 'real reasons'. It is a shame that the Bush admin was unwilling and or unable to articulate this vision."
If the real reason of changing the regime in Iraq is to alter the Saudi regime, then that's one messed up policy.
The main reason for changing the regime in Iraq is what Iraq had done, was doing, and was going to do. And Bush has repeatively stated that by successfully transforming Iraq towards a democracy this would have a significant positive effect on the entire region.
To think that the leadership of Saudi Arabia doesn't want to transform it's country is naive. Saudi Arabia has one of the highest standard of living in the world; they are well educated. They don't want to become another USA or France, but they certainly know they have to transform their country.
Iraq was a hell hole, it had an excessively large army [and look at all the conventional armaments Iraq had accumulated], it was repressive to it's people, and it's leadership had ambitions of unifying all the Arab country by miltary power. Of course if you change the regime in Iraq you could improve the region- Iraq was destablizing the region.
