Some notes from the World Social Forum

Or: "Are Israeli Leftists Beginning to Get A Clue?

A Palestinian doctor told Warschawski that "the struggle against Israel is not for a Palestinian state but for the defeat of the Zionist project. Israel is illegitimate, not since 1967, but since 1948. We would resist it even if it were on the other side of the Mediterranean."

...An Israeli backpacker added: "I am a good Israeli. I accept the Palestinian right to violent resistance." He was crushed by the response of Faisal from Tullkarm: "I know better Israelis; they are dead."

One of the hardest lessons reasonable people have to learn is that you cannot compromise or negotiate with someone who has the single overriding goal of destroying you. Israel is learning that about the Palestinian radicals. The West is learning that about Islamic radicals.

Bush still hasn't learned that about the Democrats. ;)

My dad used to work for Pillsbury as their pollution control expert. He was frustrated and confused by the fact that no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't make the environmentalists happy. I tried to explain to him that he worked for a large American corporation. They didn't want his company to clean up the water, they wanted his company dead, dead, dead. Don't think it sunk in, but he's retired and happier now.
