Deals with the Devil -- Failing to stop Hitler and the Holocaust

In a previous sub-thread the discussion touched upon the issue of stopping Hitler before WWII and the Holocaust. I brought to the board's attention the economic boycott organized by Jews against the Nazi regime, and showed that the boycott was undermined by certain Zionist factions with other priorities. This set of links expands on that theme with a range of viewpoints.

At the time, Jewry was spearheading a worldwide boycott of Nazi Germany. Under these circumstances, how was it possible that Germany, desperately short of foreign currency, agreed to this transfer of money and material? What motivated the Germans to guarantee at least 1,000 sterling, the equivalent of $5,000, required by the British Palestine government for each "capitalist" immigrant? Was the suspension of the boycott the price for such an operation? This question, during the 1930s, tore the Jewish world apart.

How the Zionists busted the anti-Nazi boycott and built the state

JERUSALEM - It has been called, along with Ben Hecht's Perfidy, the most controversial book about Israel ever written. Unlike Perfidy, The Transfer Agreement by Edwin Black (MacMillan, 1985) never had an audience. It was taken off the shelves quickly and surreptitiously and is almost impossible to find. I thank David Perkins for traveling to Washington and making copies at the Library of Congress.

What Black's book painstakingly proves is that in 1933, while the rest of World Jewry was organizing an economic boycott of the new Nazi regime in Germany in the hope of breaking it before it could mount the Holocaust, the Mapai (Labour Party) faction of the Zionist Organization based in Jerusalem decided to make Nazi Germany Palestine's chief trading partner.[...]

It's as if whoever plotted the murder of Rabin said, "Let's do Arlosoroff all over again." Once Rabin was out of the way, all debate about the Oslo Accord was hushed in precisely the same manner. Anyone who dared oppose the accord was labeled an assassin and that justified carrying on with the nefarious agreement.

To my critics I say, read "The Transfer Agreement" by Edwin Black. Learn from history. The same mentality of the same people are at work in our time. We cannot allow them to lead us to slaughter again.

Barry Chamish article The Transfer Agreement (read down)

The Nazis were on the run, with a number of key countries, such as Rumania, leaving the Axis. A second front was a matter of months away, as the western Allies prepared their forces. In the midst of all this we find Eichmann, the master bureaucrat of industrial murder, setting up is HQ in occupied Budapest, after the German takeover of the country in April 1944. His first act was to have a conference with the Jewish leadership, and to appoint Zionist Federation members, headed by Kastner, as the agent and clearing house for all Jews in their relationship with the SS and Nazi authorities.[...]

The Committee faced a simple choice - to tell the Jews of Hungary about their fate, (with neutral Rumania, where many could escape, being in most cases a few hours away) or to collaborate with the Nazis by assisting in the concentration process. What would not have been believed when coming from the SS, sounded quite plausible when coming from the mouths of the Zionist leadership. Thus it is, that most of the Hungarian Jews went quietly to their death, assured by their leadership that they were sent to work camps.

Zionism and the Holocaust

The U.S. embassy in Berlin reported back to Washington that the “costly election campaigns” and “the cost of maintaining a private army of 300,000 to 400,000 men”' had raised questions as to the Nazis' financial backers. The constitutional government of the German republic moved to defend national freedom by ordering the Nazi Party private armies disbanded. The U.S. embassy reported that the Hamburg-Amerika Line was purchasing and distributing propaganda attacks against the German government, for attempting this last-minute crackdown on Hitler's forces.[...]

Prescott Bush's American Ship and Commerce Corp. notified Max Warburg of Hamburg, Germany, on March 7, 1933, that Warburg was to be the corporation's official, designated representative on the board of Hamburg-Amerika.

Max Warburg replied on March 27, 1933, assuring his American sponsors that the Hitler government was good for Germany: “For the last few years business was considerably better than we had anticipated, but a reaction is making itself felt for some months. We are actually suffering also under the very active propaganda against Germany, caused by some unpleasant circumstances. These occurrences were the natural consequence of the very excited election campaign, but were extraordinarily exaggerated in the foreign press. The Government is firmly resolved to maintain public peace and order in Germany, and I feel perfectly convinced in this respect that there is no cause for any alarm whatsoever.”

This seal of approval for Hitler, coming from a famous Jew, was just what Harriman and Bush required, for they anticipated rather serious “alarm” inside the U.S.A. against their Nazi operations.

On March 29, 1933, two days after Max's letter to Harriman, Max's son, Erich Warburg, sent a cable to his cousin Frederick M. Warburg, a director of the Harriman railroad system. He asked Frederick to “use all your influence” to stop all anti-Nazi activity in America, including “atrocity news and unfriendly propaganda in foreign press, mass meetings, etc.” Frederick cabled back to Erich: “No responsible groups here [are] urging [a] boycott [of] German goods[,] merely excited individuals.” Two days after that, On March 31, 1933, the American-Jewish Committee, controlled by the Warburgs, and the B'nai B'rith, heavily influenced by the Sulzbergers (New York Times), issued a formal, official joint statement of the two organizations, counseling “that no American boycott against Germany be encouraged,” and advising “that no further mass meetings be held or similar forms of agitation be employed.”

The American Jewish Committee and the B'nai B'rith (mother of the “Anti-Defamation League”) continued with this hardline, no-attack-on-Hitler stance all through the 1930s, blunting the fight mounted by many Jews and other anti-fascists.

George Bush, The Unauthorized Biography --Chapter 2, The Hitler Project

As Hitler began to consolidate power in the early 30's, various efforts were made to counter the mounting Nazi threat. Foremost among these was the worldwide Jewish economic boycott of German goods, a noble, potentially decisive financial weapon against the Third Reich that was ultimately defused by politics and greed.

In the United States, The Nye Committee would not present its findings until 1936. Its portrayal of "The Merchants of Death" convinced many Americans that WWI had been fought primarily due to the machinations of the armaments industry, but as we have seen, American financial and industrial ties with the Germans were already well established by the late 20's, and continued through the beginning of hositilites until they were seized by the U.S. government in late 1942.

As an intersting sidenote, Alger Hiss was council for the Nye Committee, and it was during this period, apparently, that he first hooked up with Whitaker Chambers.
