pyrite comes in many forms

The cube is only one form of crystalline pyrite, another form, the pyritohedron, is almost spherical.

I'm not saying the nodules are pyrite, I'm waiting for more data, but for fun, Google "pyrite nodules" and you will see many terrestrial examples, especially:
