They had a real lesson in "democracy", didn't they?

I mean, they didn't really see how things work in a "free" country, how a democracy values and respects the individual, even those we fight against and disagree with, how we value the human rights even of prisoners. Of due process, of the Geneva Convention.

They didn't see anything different from the dictatorships and warlords who hold people incommunicado at the leaders whim that they grew up with.

Do you really see any reason why they wouldn't? I guess that's a serious question, because I know if I were treated as were they I would undoubtedly be even more anti-whoever-held-me, and I suspect you would too.

Now, granted they were prisoners, but there are prisoners and there are prisoners. Most American POWs return to the military, most British the same, most Germans to Germany, and the Russians went back to Russia. And those were the ones who were treated well.

As I understand it, most of those released were just children anyway.
