1. The Iraqi defence forces are going to need more time and more people before they can take care of these insurgents and terrorists on their own.

2. That the goals of the insurgency are not to simply "get America out of Iraq," but to take over the nation and set up a new tyranny. Even the Iraqis see this now.

It was foolish to set a deadline for this summer for turning over Iraq to home rule. It hasn't even been a year yet since the war started. It took seven years before Japan was turned over to its own people after WWII. The current timetable is unrealistic, and having people fanning the election fever in the Shiites and others isn't helping.
