No longer true. Recent batteries, now available at stores, permit thousands of discharge/recharge cycles.
Photovoltaic cells have very long lifetimes also.
To me, the biggest challenge is keeping them free of dust.
As far as isotopes are concerned, there are quite a few that are usable.
