re: In the early '70s, I thought everyone hated Nader . . .

I know my father did.

Nader was the one who came up with the idea of cutting those nifty grooves in the surface of freeways to allow rain water to run off more quickly, thus cutting down on the danger of hydroplaning. It also caused tires to wear down more quickly. We seemed to have paid for this transportation "improvement" through taxation, as well as more frequent trips to local tire dealers.

Did Nader hold stock in Firestone?

A Short Ramble:
Of course my father was a union man (and still is today), so any "better business" changes were considered unwanted, and damned outlaw if the change replaced a single union worker. We failed to see eye-to-eye on that one, with my head buried in the idea of eventually automating the empire, from construction to consumer interface. But that's just me trying to get by in my "Asimovian" dream world, where Nader and I have managed to agree on a number of things -- though not of who should or should not be president of the United States of America.

Anyway, it's well known that automation beats the human almost every time, and generally exponentially. That's why it works. Just ask John Henry. Sure, the automated tunneller couldn't whistle or sing, but it managed to out-hammer JH with ease.

And then there's the issue of disgruntled employees. Murders, assaults, and even rape in the workplace continue on a daily basis. It is my opinion that the only reason people should ever intermingle is through choice and personal need, not through corporate or political demand. Sounds a little racist, I know, but it's really not. Hell, I have close relatives I would rather not see too often. It's a question of "me and mine first", and just one of the many freedoms of choice we currently survive without.

But one of these days...

Cheers to ya, Tom,
Dan
