WASHINGT0N (Reuters) - With the U.S. presidential election campaign under way, late-night comedy television show hosts are taking a humorous look at the candidates.
Here are some lines broadcast on Wednesday:
NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno":
Commenting on the Super Tuesday primary results, Leno said: "Today John Edwards finally stopped smiling. As you know John Kerry won Super Tuesday, making this of course anticlimactic Wednesday."
"Well, Kerry is well on his way to reaching his magic number of 2,162. That's the total number of Democratic delegates he needs to win the nomination. President Bush is different. His magic number is 5. That's the number of Supreme Court judges needed to win."
"John Kerry has already begun his search for a running mate. They say that because John Edwards still has $50 million in campaign money Kerry might pick him. Pick him, hey, for 50 million Kerry will marry him."
"John Kerry says he wants to be the next black president. In a recent interview, Kerry said Clinton was known as the first black president and he'd like to earn the right to be the second."
"Is John Kerry the closest we can get to a black president? How does it make Al Sharpton feel? He's going, hey guys, hello, I'm an actual black person. Hello, you could vote for me."
"And Howard Dean won Vermont last night even though he quit the campaign two weeks ago. He said, think how many states I could have won if I'd quit sooner. If I'd quit in July I could have been president now."
"In a number of interviews yesterday, Dick Cheney said he's become a lightning rod. A lightning rod. You can understand how he feels that way if you have to have your heart jump-started every morning ... There are rumors that Cheney will be replaced. But President Bush is very loyal. He says he's standing by him. I understand that every day Bush buys Cheney a large cheese and pepperoni pizza. What does that mean? I don't know what that means."
CBS' "The Late Show with David Letterman":
Yesterday was Super Tuesday and John Kerry won everything except Vermont, Letterman said.
"George Bush calls John Kerry to congratulate him on winning the big Super Tuesday and being the democratic candidate. Bush is shrewd. While he had Kerry on the phone he also got a $1,000 campaign contribution out of him."
