Off Topic » in reply to How the press failed us re: run-up to the war

It's a recurrent problem.

Read something in the last couple of days, can't find it, which talked about this. The press was afraid to report the Vietnam war as what it was, a civil war and an attempt to oust foreigners, any foreigners, rather than a struggle to impose communism over Southeast Asia.

The author added that it was just too much for the press to do to counter the lynch-mob mentality which took over after the Gulf of Tonkin fabrication. Any reporter or paper which didn't go along with the "domino effect" nonsense of Kissinger would have been figuratively lynched. Look at the efforts of conservatives to denigrate those who don't support the slaughter of Iraqis even though they were no threat.

Another area in which the US, and not the ROW, gets censored news is regarding Israel and the Palestinians. Anything which paints Palestinians as humans with bones, blood and brains gets splattered with an anti-Semitic label, and the ADL, et al., promise to boycott the medium and sponsors appearing on it.

Understandably, not many companies want to take that on, so much of the US is ignorant of the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians which is acknowledged in the rest of the world, and even Israel. Even though Israel has nukes, armor, artillery and an army, air force and navy, none of which the Palestinians have, folks in the US come back with "the Palestinians are trying to drive Israel into the sea", a bit of PR carefully nurtured over time by Israel.
