From Telegraph.
Okay, I'm not Kerry's biggest fan, but I have no idea how this is a negative.
Kerry tried to get deferred to go to school? Back in my time, that would put him in with one HELL of a big crowd. I didn't go to school specifically to get deferred--I was there anyway--but I wasn't complaining about the deferment for those years either. This was the age of the lottery, and eventually I got a high number. The draft didn't last much longer after that, and my backoff position had been Air Force ROTC. Kind of like Kerry, except I didn't like boats.
Interesting, enlistees (not draftees) being able to defer service to go to school was one of the big perks offered in the Army advertising for some years. It was on TV and in magazines. Enlist now, get paid to go to school, and serve later. That was the deal, not any kind of a trick.
There may be some odd things about Kerry's service--which he chose to make a major political issue, nobody else--but this isn't one of them.
Neither is the issue about Purple Hearts for non-serious wounds. I've never been in the military, but I am led to believe that the threshold for getting a Purple Heart has been extremely flexible over the years, and Kerry would not be the only one getting medals for minor wounds.
Now, if you want something to think about, try this.
Kerry and deferred service
