Would JPL risk sending the "Spirit" Mars down to the bottom of the crater, Bonneville?
There are pros and cons.
(1) The lengthy shadows at the bottom of the crater may inhibit the function of the solar-panels on Spirit.
(2) There may be treacherous shifting sands on the slopes of the crater that may trap Spirit.
(3) Among the pros: Close-up geological analysis of rocks and dust inside the crater is tempting.
