re: Agreed

I think both sides of the arguments would agree that you are probably one of the most open-minded people here. But you have to be careful. The idea that answers aren't easy to find can too easily be morphed into the idea that there are no answers.

I have no flawless idea how one would resurrect the nuclear industry at this point. To do it right would require a mature and objective outlook, uncolored by psychotic antinuclear religious zealots.

If I was in charge, step one would be to gather the advances that have been made in reactor technology, like pebble bed reactors, gas cooled reactors, and a number of others.

Step two would be massive analysis and reform of insurance and liability needs. I have not studied this in detail, but I suspect the industry is paralyzed by overly-strict rules in this area.

Step three would be reviving the breeder reactor programs, to reduce waste and the need for raw fissionable material.

Step four would be a rational way of dealing with waste, which IMO is NOT to bury it in salt mines. Store it above ground in massively shielded facilities on military bases in the deep desert, guarded as a military base would be. At some point we will come up with a clever way to eliminate it, and it needs to be recoverable in that event, not buried forever.
