then it usually is.
Some full filter set images taken by Spirit of the IDD on Maz. rock that it's been playing with for a few days.
Now - we can make no assumptions whatsoever about the colour of anything using the 'raw images' at JPL - as we dont know what treatment they've had between being taken, being processed onboard, being compressed, being de-compressed, and being published to the web. There's the exposure, stretching of brightness onboard, and ditto when they get on the ground before being JPG's - so anyone who says they're doing 'real colours' based on the Raw Images from JPL is deluded. It's - at best - a best guess.
Thus - when something we already know the colour of appears in shot, like the Sundial, or the IDD - then we can at least get some sort of idea that we're there or there abouts if the image looks about right w.r.t. known man made features - which infers that everything not manmade is essentially as close to real colour as one can guesstimate with these Raw Image;
Thus - I present an image of Maz. via L4, 5, 6 - with the IDD and it's stars and stripes appearing fairly 'normal' - and guess what, the rock looks just the same colour that one gets with NASA press releases. I guess the Press Office from Pasadena must have visited me here in Leicester, UK and doctored the image to make sure that the rock conforms to the official fake-colours-of-mars protocol. Sorry - couldnt resist a dig at the colour conspiracists.
